"Spin Me Round" 2-Digit Addition Game |
Lots of learning since our last update! We've wrapped up two-digit addition (to 100) by participating in lots of partner activities.
These are the two strategies we
learned for "regrouping".
Front End Addition
(Mental Math Strategy)
Essential Vocabulary
Addend = a number that is being added to another
Sum = the answer or total in an addition equation
Add the tens. Add the ones.
Add the tens and ones together.
Example:
46
+ 28
40 + 20 = 60
6 + 8 = 14
60 + 14 = 74
Or, 60 + 14 -> 60 + 10 + 4 = 74
|
Carrying
(Traditional Strategy)
Put you tens up top
And your ones down low.
Add them all together
And you're ready to go.
Example:
1
46
+ 28
74
|
We will be moving onto two-digit subtraction with regrouping next. These are the strategies we will learn:
Expand the Subtrahend
(Mental Math Strategy)
Essential Vocabulary
Minuend = the (larger) number in a subtraction equation
Subtrahend = the (smaller) number that is being subtracted
Difference = the answer in a subtraction equation
Example:
46
- 28
46 - 20 = 26
26 - 8 = 18
|
Borrowing
(Traditional Strategy)
More on top,
Don't stop.
More on the floor,
Go next door.
Number's the same,
Zero's the game.
Example:
3 16
4 6
- 2 8
1 8
*Please excuse the fact that the numbers are crossed our horizontally, rather than diagonally.

Go Noodle! |
We have been
Go Noodling for a few weeks now!
Go Noodle is a free web app that provides five minute brain breaks. It helps channel student energy - sometimes we do yoga to calm ourselves down and sometimes we try out new dance moves to use up our excess energy. It's a great way to meet our need for DPA (Daily Physical Activity).

"May I ask you a question?"
Nutrition Interviews |
Before spring break, we completed a unit on Solids, Liquids, and Gases. We also learned how to be Heart Smart Kids by following the three steps to a healthy heart: Eat Good Food, Get Active Play, and Live Smoke-Free. Recently, we have been learning about Air, Soil, and Water. We will also be learning about the environment, in anticipation for our field trip to the Apple Store, where we will work in partners to apply our newfound knowledge about pollution by creating a slide show out of photos and captions.
For those parents who offered to accompany us on our upcoming field trip, please note that the details have changed slightly. When 2C went last week, they were offered Keynote on MacBooks, rather than iMovie on iPads. Therefore, we are anticipating the same change to our itinerary.
