February 2, 2014

After conducting an experiment to learn what causes the groundhog to see its shadow, students made their own predictions for February 2nd.
Reminder: The much-anticiapted "flip" will occur this coming Wednesday. For the remainder of the school year, 2A will begin the day with Judaic Studies and 2B will begin the day with General Studies.

We would greatly appreciate it if someone from each family could CLICK HERE to update your child's end of day pick up routine. This information will be available to Morah Judith and myself.

"Old Fashioned" Bingo (created on the Bingo Baker website)

Virtual Bingo Card
Math: A recent highlight of our addition and subtraction unit was using the website Bingo Baker to make Bingo cards that can be used directly on the iPad, as well as printed for a paper and pencil version of Bingo. To try this at home, simply select numbers 0-18 to fill up the Bingo squares. Then, have the caller call out addition or subtraction problems. The player identifies the sum or difference and taps the number on his or her virtual Bingo card. The tapped numbers will turn yellow to indicate they have been selected.

We have been learning some math "magic" tricks. Roll some dice and ask your child if he or she can "see through" the dice to reveal the sum of the numbers that aren't showing. We have also been working with Magic Squares. A magic square has the same sum for all of its rows and columns.
Some of our favourite books

Language Arts: We made book covers for our favourite classroom books. We also worked on a reader's theatre play called, "Is it Spring Yet?" to go along with our mini unit about Groundhog Day. According to Alberta's groundhog, Balzac Billy, who didn't see his shadow, spring is on its way!

Theme: Students have been working hard to prepare for their Community Helper presentations. We look forward to having you join us for your child's presentation. Please CLICK HERE for the schedule.

Congratulations to our very first member in the Behaviour Hall of Fame!  We have since had two other members join this prestigious club.

Please put aside your gently-used children's books. We will be having a primary grades book exchange soon. Details to follow in the coming weeks!
